Whether its serving customers or filling the shelves, going to work offers a real buzz for foundation skills student Kyle.

The 21-year-old from Stockton has long dreamed of securing work, and a job at his local Co-op branch means his ambition has become a reality.

“I like to keep busy,” said the former Abbey Hill Academy pupil, who impressed employers while carrying out a work placement at the Roseworth store.

Never imagining it would ultimately lead to a job offer, Kyle, who has moderate learning difficulties, speech and language difficulties, was delighted when a vacancy came up and his application was successful.

Job coach and work experience co-ordinator Laura Thompson said: “Since he joined the college in 2020 Kyle’s confidence has come on leaps and bounds. There was a time when he declined even internal work experience as he lacked confidence in his ability.”

Working his way through the college’s pathway programmes and on to a supported internship, Kyle has developed his skills and confidence.

Spending time working on the college’s sweet stall and The Thrift Exchange, helped prepare him for the Co-op placement.

“Once there he went above and beyond, even giving his own time during the summer,” said Laura.

It all stood him in good stead when a job became available.

“I was so happy to get the job,” said Kyle. “This is what I have wanted.”

Co-op store manager Andy Dickinson said: “Kyle’s work is spot-on, he is a great member of the team and always has a smile on his face.”
