This course is designed for learners who are interested in a basic introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information. Alongside other fields of study, learners will develop their IT skills with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT.

You will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information, including through Social Media.

BTEC Nationals have always required applied learning that brings together knowledge and understanding with practical and technical skills. This is achieved through learners performing vocational tasks and transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are valued in both higher education and the workplace.

Assessment is specifically designed to fit the purpose and objective of the qualification. It is made up of a series of mandatory and optional units. There are two types of mandatory unit: externally assessed, and internally assessed.

Externally assessed are tasks set and marked by the examination board. Internally assessed are assignments marked by the centre.

To have achieved A*/9-C/4 grades in at least five GCSE programmes. This must include either GCSE English or GCSE Maths, and a grade C/4 in GCSE Information Technology, OR, a Merit grade in BTEC L2 in Information Technology.

In the first year you will study the BTEC National Certificate in IT, the equivalent to half an A level. In the second year you will top up to the BTEC Extended Certificate, the equivalent to one A level.
