It has taken hard work and determination, but this group of young adults have proven they have got what it takes to succeed in the workplace.

The supported interns, from Stockton Riverside College, were among those to see their achievements recognised at a summer graduation-style event, hosted by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.

There to cheer them every step of the way, Alexa Lang, group high needs manager at the Education Training Collective (Etc.), said: “To see the progress and development these young people have made is amazing.

“I can remember the uncertainty and excitement when they started at college. To now see the confidence, self-assurance, friendships and independence they have achieved, not to mention the skills and knowledge, is phenomenal.”

Supported internships offer young adults with an education health and care plan the chance to build the skills to move into work by building their confidence, knowledge and experience of the workplace.  The aim is to move towards their individual goals, whether that be securing permanent employment or building the skills to live more independent lives.

At Stockton Riverside College, part of the Etc., supported interns work with employers including the Shaw Trust Stockton, ARC, Quay Corner café and even Amazon.

Alexa said: “The supported internships available in Stockton offer our young people a real opportunity to be supported ready for employment. I feel lucky to play a small part in supporting young people with an education health and care plan into adulthood.”

The graduation at the River Tees Watersports Centre, brought together interns from across the borough, with learners from Stockton Riverside College, Choices College and Middlesbrough College.

Councillor Clare Besford, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Supported internships give young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) a brilliant opportunity to get work experience, build the skills and confidence to take their next steps in life.

“Congratulations to all the interns, who have worked so hard to complete their qualification. It was wonderful to see them graduate and I would like to wish them all the very best for their future endeavours.”
