From the swimming pool to the classroom, former water babies’ instructor Carolyn is fulfilling her ambition of a career in teaching.

After five years of study at Stockton Riverside College, she is gearing up for graduation this November where she will pick up her BA (Hons) in Education and Training.

Prior to returning to her studies as an adult learner, the Billingham-based mum of two had worked as a water babies’ teacher for seven years.

It was only when she began homeschooling the kids that she considered retraining in teaching. Carolyn admits: “It took me nine months to decide before doing my Level 2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning because I loved my job.”

Since taking the initial leap of faith with the level 2 course, Carolyn went on to study the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning, followed by a foundation degree (FdA), and finally the BA top-up qualification.

Reflecting on her college experience and the adult dedicated study areas, she said: “We studied in the higher education corridor and had lectures in pods too. It was a small class of about 10 people.”

Topping up to degree level required Carolyn, 46, to study one evening per week alongside a full-time teaching job at a primary school.

When asked about her work-life balance, she said: “I’m a doer, not a thinker. I get a lot of family support with the kids. 8:30/9 pm is my study time.”

Not only has she overcome the demands of work and study, she was also diagnosed with Acute Leukaemia in November 2025, an illness which she is still managing and has required periods of chemotherapy treatment.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Carolyn is focused on her future. Next, she intends to take her GCSE Science remotely, a stepping stone that will enable her to do a one-year PCGE through work.
