Introduction

This two-year, full-time course requires attendance two days per week during the academic year. It offers comprehensive professional training in counselling, equipping you with both a strong theoretical foundation and essential practitioner skills. These skills will enable you to work safely and effectively as a counsellor. The course is primarily based on the person-centred approach, with elements of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, and integrative approaches explored for comparison.

What will I learn

During the course you are required to undertake at least 20 hours of personal therapy throughout the course (10 in each academic year). Attendance at four mandatory weekend workshops is also expected (2 each academic year), with an additional fee applicable for these sessions. By the end of the second year of the course, you must complete a minimum of 100 hours of supervised clinical practice with a recognised counselling agency.

How will I learn

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, and independent study. Additionally, your learning experience will include experiential exercises, skills practice, group discussions, case studies, reflective journals, supervised clinical practice, and personal therapy. These methods will support both your theoretical understanding and the development of essential counselling skills.

What's next

Upon completing this qualification, you will be eligible to practise as a counsellor. You may also choose to progress to further study, such as the BA (Hons) in Therapeutic Counselling. Additionally, you may wish to pursue BACP registered membership and work towards accreditation.

Additional Information

A variety of assessment methods are used to demonstrate learning such as referenced essays, individual and small group presentations, case reports, reflective commentaries and observer feedback.

With smaller class sizes, students benefit from increased contact time with experienced tutors, who are also practising counsellors within the industry. This ensures that teaching is grounded in real-world experience, with valuable insights into current counselling practices.
This course offers high-quality professional training in counselling within a supportive and flexible learning environment.
The course structure is designed for flexibility, making it more accessible for those balancing other commitments.
