Continuous assessment throughout and a portfolio of evidence.

How are you assessed?

There will be an assessment for each unit. Some assessments have time constraints.

You need:

GCSEs grade 3/D or above including English and maths or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

What do you need to know?

You will need a uniform

You will also work towards a Level 2 Food Safety Certificate alongside your course.

Apprenticeship

An Apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to get into the world of work and earn real money whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications.

If you are a school leaver, currently unemployed or looking to start a new career, Stockton Riverside College can help you to find the right Apprenticeship and employer for you.

Cookery Apprenticeships

Stockton Riverside College’s cookery apprenticeships give you the skills you need for a career as a professional cook or chef. Jobs can be based in hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars/nightclubs, contract catering or school catering. Employers may be part of well-known hospitality chains or small businesses.

Main Duties:

As a level 2 apprentice, duties may include:
• Assisting the kitchen team
• Cooking, preparing and finishing food to specifications
• Ensuring the health, safety and welfare of all guests and colleagues
• Ensuring the kitchen is constantly supplied with a full range of menu items
• Cleaning

As a level 3 apprentice, duties may include:
• Assisting in kitchen management
• Liaising with the Head Chef on menu development
• Preparing, cooking and finishing food

Assessment:

Level 2:

The way that apprenticeships are delivered is changing. Some apprenticeships now include an end-point assessment which includes:
• A multiple choice short answer test
• An observation of practice which is undertaken in the workplace
• A learning journal to reflect on the last 3 months of your apprenticeship
• A presentation

You will be supported throughout the process by your assessor.

Level 3:

You will be allocated a course tutor/assessor to provide guided learning and support with assignments. You will be observed in the workplace by your allocated assessor.

You need:

Apprenticeships require a good level of English, maths and/or ICT. Our initial assessment and your GCSE results will help inform us of your ability and what support we can offer to get you to the level required.

If you do not hold the relevant GCSEs you will need to complete the Functional Skills qualifications as part of your apprenticeship.

You must be:

  • at least 16
  • a UK resident
  • in employment. We can help with this

To undertake a level 3 apprenticeship, you need a level 2 qualification or to have experience in a relevant field.

Duration:

Level 2: 18 months
Level 3: 24 months

English & Maths

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and Maths. These are essential skills that all employers value. Your tutor can answer any questions you have regarding this.

Work experience/employability

We want to help you develop real skills for real jobs. That’s why we work closely with a wide range of employers to ensure all of our courses give you the skills that they are looking for in their future employees. Valuable work experience is built into all of our Catering & Hospitality courses. Students work in our on-site bistro and restaurant as well as carrying out work placements at commercial outlets or local catering establishments. Our dedicated online program ‘My Work Search’ will help prepare you for future job opportunities.

Social and personal development

You’ll get the opportunity to develop a range of additional skills including the ability to work independently and as part of a team, putting together and delivering presentations, communication, time management and customer service skills. Your tutor will be able to tell you more about course specific developments.
