This year we are so proud of all our students who have taken part in the Inter-College Competitions on behalf of Stockton Riverside College.
The College has been buzzing with activity recently as we hosted lots of external students from across the region for competitions in health and social care, inclusive skills and foundation learning to name a few!
We welcomed Redcar and Cleveland College, South Tyneside College, Middlesbrough College, Newcastle College, Bishop Auckland College and East Durham College for the North east Inter-College Competition for health and social care. The level 1 students worked in pairs to plan a nutritious meal for use in an elderly care setting. Level 3 students worked in the health suite to triage a new patient to gain physiological measurements to determine their next steps. All students taking part had a brilliant morning and enjoyed lunch together before the prizes were presented to the winners! Nobody went home empty handed as all participants were given an Easter egg to take away.
In the inclusive skills competition, students demonstrated their knowledge in art and design, catering, IT, employability, hairdressing and joinery, with competitors from a selection of local colleges. It was an exciting day as students took part in a variety of tasks, including creating a greeting card for spring, making delicious scones and designing a poster on the topic of mental health. Where possible, we encourage local businesses to get involved, the joinery competition was kindly judged by a representative from Keepmoat Homes. A big thanks also to the employability students, who helped to sign in visitors on the day, putting their customer service skills into practice. Everybody put in a fantastic effort and were a credit to their respective colleges.
We caught up with Frankie, one of our level 2 bricklaying students, who has recently won the inter-college regional skills competition for bricklaying, winning £300 worth of tools! Frankie said: “I was very happy to be chosen to represent the College in the competition. On the day I was nervous and excited but felt confident when I was building the wall. When they called my name to say I had won I felt ecstatic and very proud to have come first for myself and the College.” Curriculum Manager, Alex Thompson, advised that Frankie is an asset to the College after completing both of his practical exams with a distinction. In a couple of weeks’ time Frankie will be starting his apprenticeship with D Lane Builders, we wish him the best of luck!
Another congratulations goes to motor vehicle students, Harry and James who recently took first and second place in their regional skills competition at New College Durham. They were tasked with identifying and correcting faults with the brakes and steering of a vehicle, both students did a great job!
Taking part in these competitions are so important for our students, they can help with boosting confidence and improving communication skills which are important tools for the workplace. It means that the students get hands-on experience and time away from the classroom and in some cases, explore other colleges and external sites. Students are able to put these accolades on their CV and all students get recognised for taking part. We are so proud of everybody who has taken part in a competition so far this year.
