Several students from across the region recently participated in the first ever Inter-College Construction Competition held at East Durham College, including four of our very own!

The students not only had the opportunity to proudly show off their skillsets but to be rewarded for their efforts with some incredible prizes provided by Bosch UK, including everything from combi drills to branded workwear and water bottles.

The competition pushed students to take on complex projects within their trade area, which were then judged by an expert in the retrospective field. From Stockton Riverside College we had Level 2 students, Charlie and John for Bricklaying, Level 2 student, Ali for Painting and Decorating and Level 2 student, Simon for Joinery.

The bricklaying competition gave students five hours to construct a two-brick attached pier with a Welsh arch to the precise measurements – not an easy feat! The painting and decorating students had to precisely replicate a design of distinctive primary colour shapes and wallpapered section, and in Joinery we saw students take on the task of drawing and constructing a complex woodworking project.

The students all performed amazing well, so well in fact that it went down to the tiniest of details to find winners in all areas. However, big congratulations are in order for Simon who placed 3rd in Joinery!

Alex Thompson, trade skills course lead said, “All the students performed well, and the best part of the day for me was the behaviour of the students. You could tell at the end of the day they had given their all and were relieved to have finished. They were still upbeat and you could tell their confidence had been boosted competing against the best in the North East.”

The day showcased the outstanding future talent in the North East, and we can't wait to offer this opportunity to more of our students at next year's competition!

Well done to all involved.
