A team of young people pitched in to give back to their own community.

For those involved, this included rolling up their sleeves to build a polytunnel, raised flower beds and birdhouses, as part of e50k’s project at Brambles Wood.

All were taking part in The Prince’s Trust Catterick Team programme, a 12-week personal development course delivered by the Education Training Collective.

Team leader Seveci Navelinikoro, known as Nav, said: “As always, I was so incredibly proud of the efforts of these young people, their commitment to the project and all that they have achieved.”

The Prince’s Trust Team programme aims to give young people aged 16 to 25, who are not currently in education or employment, the chance to build their confidence, gain employability skills and find their future direction.

A series of activities, including work experience and an adventure residential, helps team members to discover and develop essential life skills.

Nav explained: “The two-week community project is a key part of the course that really allows the young people to work as a team, develop organisational and leadership qualities.

“For them it is also a chance to give back to the community and realise the direct impact they can have on those around them.”

Gifted stewardship of Brambles Wood, e50k is working to create an intergenerational space for the community with a communal fire pit, allotment space, polytunnels, a wildflower meadow and ponds.

Nav said this seemed the perfect project for the Catterick Team, who meet at the youth and community centre at Risedale Sports and Community College in Hipswell, to lend a hand.

“In this instance what our students were able to give was their time and physical effort,” he added.

And the team didn’t hold back when it came to the groundwork and heavy lifting.

Grateful for the support, e50k’s head of communities, Catherine Clapham, said: “The students from The Prince's Trust programme were fundamental in building the allotments at Bramble Woods, they were incredibly dedicated, enthusiastic and hardworking and we could not have done it without them. As a result, we now have 13 allotment beds for the local community and local Armed Forces families to use.”
