Stockton Riverside College put the spotlight on apprenticeships with a dedicated event bringing together potential future apprentices and employers with live vacancies.

The showcase was part of the college’s programme of activity to mark National Apprenticeship Week (NAW 2022).

Inviting along anyone wanting to know more about their options, the college’s group business development manager, Tamsin Edwards, said: “It was fantastic to be able to share some of the amazing vacancies currently available on our doorstep.”

For those apprenticeship jobseekers it was a chance to meet employers from across the Tees Valley, get a flavour of just what’s out there and pick up some expert advice from the college’s apprenticeship team.

Employers represented on the night included PD Ports, Nifco, LV Shipping, Tindles Chartered Accountants, Doornbos and SNE Care.

With apprenticeship vacancies to fill, LV Shipping’s company ambassador, Matthew Ord, said: “We have looked at the roles we have available at LV and made them into apprenticeships and we have dedicated two years to train those apprentices up.”

By cultivating their own talent, he added: “We want our apprentices to be smart, able and willing to learn.  As long as you are ready to apply yourself, and apply yourself well, there are opportunities in logistics.”

Bringing along some of their own apprentices to offer an insight, PD Ports’ Emily Bulmer said: “At PD Ports we view apprenticeships as vital stepping stones for our business – equipping our people with the theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin their roles and enable further personal and professional development.

“We have trained over 105 apprentices over the last five years alone and we’re incredibly proud of the fact that over 20% of our current workforce is under 30, demonstrating our continued commitment to offering sustainable, valuable opportunities to the next generation.”

PD Ports’ marketing and communications apprentice, Harry Wheildon, added: “PD Ports recognises how important apprenticeships can be to be individuals and the company. This is why PD Ports provides quality opportunities that help introduce people into our industry and add value to our business.”

With apprenticeships increasingly becoming an option for adults looking to retrain or upskill. The college’s business development manager Tamsin said: “We have apprentices working with the college group from age 16 to over 60.”

Stockton Riverside College is a part of the Education Training Collective (Etc.), also incorporating Bede Sixth Form, Redcar and Cleveland College, NETA Training and The Skills Academy.
