Carving out an exciting new career feels like a dream come true for Jack.

Impressing bosses on a work placement has led to a job offer for the 20-year-old from Stockton.

Now a yard assistant at Smithfield Timber in Middlesbrough, Jack said: “Things are going well, I like the work and feel that I belong here.”

It’s more than he could ever have hoped for signing up to a supported internship at Stockton Riverside College.

The programme aims to help young people with additional learning support needs build the skills and confidence to take their next steps in life.

Job coach and work experience co-ordinator, Laura Thompson, said: “Gaining employment has got to be the ultimate step towards achieving more independent living.”

For Jack, who has autism, and his family, it has marked a milestone, after all growing up with autism can present more than its fair share of challenges.

Mum Wendy said: “It is always a concern for every parent of a young person with a disability what the future holds.  Sometimes when that is a hidden disability it can be more of a challenge, as people’s expectations can be different.

“It has always been a goal for Jack himself, and us as a family, to encourage him into employment.  It is so important for him to have his independence, but also for his mental health and wellbeing.”

Now in a job he loves, both Jack and his family have noticed the difference in him.

Having previously studied joinery at Stockton Riverside College after leaving Abbey Hill Academy Sixth Form, of the work placement Jack said: “At first it was a bit difficult as I was trying to cope with everything and dealing with new people.”

But quickly settling in and even volunteering for more hours, he added: “They are nice people, I got used to it and now I feel like I am where I want to be.”

As for his new boss, managing director of the family-run business, John Bousfield said Jack is already proving a valued member of the team.

“We are close-knit group that tries to help each other out whenever we can, so when we heard about Jack, we were happy to give him a chance,” said John. “He soon settled in and quickly proved an asset, always keen, consistent and reliable.”

When a position became available, they didn’t think twice about keeping him on.

Jack’s mum Wendy said: “Even after just a few weeks we could see his confidence improve, talking to new people and travelling by taxi to and from work. The whole family are so proud of him.

“And hats off to the staff at Smithfield Timber who have been amazing.  I think they are proud of him too!”
