Stockton Riverside College's Makeup for Stage and Screen students have plenty to celebrate as they make their way to the national qualifiers of the prestigious WorldSkills UK competition. The incredible achievements of these students, who have progressed from the entry round, will showcase their talent and dedication in the commercial and creative makeup categories.

WorldSkills UK, a visionary independent charity, has forged a powerful partnership between employers, education, and governments. Together, they strive to elevate standards in apprenticeships and technical education, equipping more young individuals with the skills they need to embark on a successful journey in both work and life.

The competition, scheduled for Tuesday, 6th June will showcase the talent and skill of these young makeup artists, and we couldn't be prouder. Seven of our first-year students have successfully advanced in the commercial makeup competition, while two second-year students will be competing in the creative makeup category.

For these students, the competition serves as the final project of their academic year. They will now head to Trafford College in Manchester, where they will face further challenges and demonstrate their prowess in the field of makeup artistry. The anticipation is building, but our learners are more than ready to demonstrate the skills they have learnt over the duration of their creative makeup course, which focuses heavily on different mediums for fashion, film and theatre!

The commercial makeup category within this competition demands versatility from makeup artists. Working under demanding time constraints, our learners must create commercially acceptable fashion makeup and hairstyles that perfectly align with the given brief. These talented students will demonstrate their abilities in dynamic and challenging media environments while achieving a polished and flawless finish. Allow us to introduce you to a few of their awe-inspiring entries:

  • Sophie, 1st year: "No Animals Were Harmed"
  • Millie, 1st year: "Black Panther"
  • George, 1st year: "Channelling Chanel"
  • Lola, 1st year: "Doja Cat"
  • Olivia, 1st year: "Egyptian Bastet"
  • Phoebe, 1st year: "Cat Women"
  • Layne, 1st year: "Blitz Kids"

Meanwhile, the creative makeup category showcases a more specialised skill set. We can’t wait to witness the incredible talent of our second-year students, Sarrah and Libby, as they skilfully transform the human body into captivating works of art using makeup and prosthetics. Sarrah's entry revolves around the theme "Vikings," while Libby's creation embodies the concept of a "Post-apocalypse." Operating within stringent time constraints, our students will employ a wide array of makeup techniques, including mesmerising special effects, theatrical transformations, and cutting-edge high fashion artistry.

Stockton Riverside College applauds the dedication and hard work of these talented students as they progress to the national qualifier. We stand behind them, supporting their journey and eagerly await the results of the competition. We extend our congratulations to Sophie, Millie, George, Lola, Olivia, Phoebe, Layne, Sarrah, and Libby for their remarkable entries and wish them the best of luck as they continue to shine in the makeup industry.

Stockton Riverside College takes great pride in the success of its students and remains committed to empowering the next generation of makeup artists, with high praise given to our amazing makeup tutor Nina.
