A refresh and refurb of electrical and motor vehicle training facilities at Stockton Riverside College is giving students the skills they need to meet the demands of work.

Investment in the college’s dedicated motor vehicle workshop includes the addition of a four post car lift, a vehicle air conditioning service machine and an exhaust gas analyser; while electrical students are reaping the benefits of a revamped demonstration bay along with generous industry donations of new accessories and kit.

Offering level 1, 2 and 3 electrical courses as well as apprenticeship training at the college, course leader Gary Mickle said: “It’s important that our students develop their skills using the type of equipment they would be working with in the real world.

“Our aim is to create a study environment that gives students the theoretical knowledge of their subject, backed up by real practical hands-on skills and experience.”

By creating a dedicated demonstration area within the electrical workshop, complete with electrical display boards, Gary said theoretical lessons can be further illustrated with an insight into how different items operate in real terms.

Schneider Electric has also donated a vast selection of accessories, distribution and switching equipment, enhancing the learners’ experience and industry knowledge.

Looking forward to the increased training opportunities new facilities will bring to students and apprentices in the motor vehicle department, as well as the potential to deliver future adult courses such as MoT tester training, course leader Dave Hobson added: “The latest investment ensures our workshop replicates what students and apprentices can expect to see in a garage.”

With motor vehicle courses available at level 1 to 3 as well as apprenticeship training, he said: “If the learners see and become accustomed to the equipment here in the college it better prepares them for the demands of the workplace.”
