What are access courses?

An Access to Higher Education Diploma is a level 3 qualification for adults.

It is completed part-time within one year and provides the foundation knowledge and entry requirements to pursue a higher education qualification at level 4 or above (this is degree-level study and equivalents).

All courses come with a cost; however, an access course can be funded through a loan or can be free in some circumstances. An access loan will be wiped if the learner goes on to complete a higher education course.

At Stockton Riverside College, we offer two access pathways, which are Health, Science Professions and Humanities and Social Sciences.

We spoke with a group of nine learners aged between 19 and 37, who gave us an insight into what they do and where they want to go next.

Learners told us that they were preparing to go to university after completing their access course. Courses they had their sights set on include child nursing, midwifery, radiography, physiotherapy, wildlife conservation, sociology, psychology, and sports journalism.

Additionally, all but one of our learners had funded their course through a learner loan. Bobbi told us: “It was free for me as I am 20 and it’s my first level 3 course.”

Why did you choose to return to education now?

“Now that my children are grown up, I can focus on my dreams.” Yasmina

“I am tired of working in customer service and want better job opportunities.” Jessica

“I want to be qualified as soon as possible.” Kavita

“I felt ready to start a new chapter.” Emma

What is the flexibility of your course like around your life?

“I am doing it around my work. I am a self-employed nail technician.” Elise

“I am studying and raising my kids.” Hannah

“Since it’s only two evenings, I can still work.” Jessica

What is the adult learning environment like?

“Having a good mix of age/experience can help everyone progress, and it’s a good vibe.” Taylor

“The adult learner environment is very welcoming, supportive and lovely.” Bobbi

What would you say to people considering the access course?

“Definitely do it.” Kavita

“100% do it. Don’t let people put you off.” Emma
