Diploma in Painting & Decorating Level 2

Duration: One year

What will you do?

You’ll learn how to prepare areas for wall coverings and paint, how to hang and cut different types of textured paper and the theoretical knowledge to back up your skills.

You will also be required to complete one weeks work experience. This can be with a local company on an external project where we carry out all aspects of Painting and Decorating.

How will you learn?

Learning will be via a combination of practical and theoretical sessions, including lectures, presentations and demonstrations.

How are you assessed?

A diverse range of practical tasks and paper and electronic based tests. Students will be assessed on practical and theory based units across the academic year.

You need:

A Keen interest to work in the Decorative aspects of the construction trades.

Students must be able to work as a team and on an individual basis.

Why English and Maths matter…

You will need to calculate areas and volumes, take measurements, work out ratios, follow complex instructions and design. You may also be required to calculate wages, profit and loss, write risk assessments and technical reports.

What do you need to know?

Students will be interviewed prior to starting the course.

Course will be held over three full days

  • Application of coving – both cornice and centre
  • Use of Spray equipment such as HVLP and airless systems.
  • Through pricing and estimation of contracts

What do you need to know?

Construction Diplomas can be converted into NVQs at any time in the future, upon gaining employment in the relevant area. A short period of work experience on site will be available.

What’s next?

You’ll have the skills to find work in the trades or get yourself an apprenticeship. As a fully qualified painter and decorator you could work as a contractor, set up your own business or even teach others.

Apprenticeship

An Apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to get into the world of work and earn real money whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications.

If you are a school leaver, currently unemployed or looking to start a new career, Stockton Riverside College can help you to find the right Apprenticeship and employer for you.

Painting and Decorating Apprenticeships

Decorative Finishing Apprenticeships will give you the skills you need to become a painter, decorator or industrial painter. Apprentices may work on construction sites or in domestic and commercial premises. They prepare surfaces and apply finishes to create a quality end product for the client.

Main Duties:

As a level 2 apprentice, duties may include:
• Preparing background surfaces
• Applying paint by brush and roller
• Hanging standard wall coverings
• Preparing surfaces by blast method
• Applying paint by spray or other mechanical methods

As a level 3 apprentice, duties may include:
• Preparing background surfaces
• Hanging standard wall coverings
• Preparing surfaces by blast method
• Applying paint by spray or other mechanical methods
• Applying paint by brush and roller
• Fixing coving or cornice work

Assessment:

You will be allocated a course tutor/assessor to provide guided learning and support with assignments. You will be observed in the workplace by your allocated assessor.

You need:

Apprenticeships require a good level of English, maths and/or ICT. Our initial assessment and your GCSE results will help inform us of your ability and what support we can offer to get you to the level required.

If you do not hold the relevant GCSEs you will need to complete the Functional Skills qualifications as part of your apprenticeship.

You must be:

  • at least 16
  • a UK resident
  • in employment. We can help with this

To undertake a level 3 apprenticeship, you need a level 2 qualification or to have experience in a relevant field.

Duration:

Level 2: 12 months
Level 3: 18 months

English & Maths

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and Maths. These are essential skills that all employers value. Your tutor can answer any questions you have regarding this.

Work experience/employability

We want to help you develop real skills for real jobs. That’s why we work closely with a wide range of employers to ensure all of our courses give you the skills that they are looking for in their future employees. Our past students have been given the opportunity to carry out a wide range of work placements on construction sites, have benefitted from regular site visits and played a part in community-based projects. Our dedicated online program ‘My Work Search’ will help prepare you for future job opportunities.

Studying at a higher level, learners may be able to study alongside employment, either on day release or on an evening.

Social and personal development

You’ll get the opportunity to develop a range of additional skills including the ability to work independently and as part of a team, organisation and time management. You will also get the chance to take part in a range of enrichment activities and may choose to take part in our enterprise activities. Your tutor will be able to tell you more about course specific developments.
