Learners must have gained a Level 2 in Functional Skills (English and Maths) or be working towards this.
Learners must be aged 19 years or over and have gained a level 2 previously in a related field. Learners should also have experience in a school setting.
Learners will need to be working or volunteering in a school environment as they need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.
This programme is for people who are working or wish to work as teaching assistants at Key Stages 1-4. They will work with individual pupils, small and large groups. The course recognises the essential support work that is carried out in schools in helping children achieve their potential.
What will I learn
You will learn about: national frameworks and local policies and strategies and their effect on the teaching assistant’s role, the importance of monitoring and recording children’s learning, how to develop and promote positive behaviour and the importance of reflective practice. You will look at safeguarding, health and safety and risk assessment.
How will I learn
Learners will have a variety of taught sessions, workshops and placement opportunities for learning
To gain the qualification learners will need to achieve at least a PASS grade in each of the academic units and will complete at least 180 hours in a placement either on a paid or voluntary basis working with children aged 5 years +.
