Course overview

Whether working as a teacher, nursery nurse or in the care industry, it is vital you can offer a service that is caring, supportive, fun and stimulating. Here at Stockton Riverside College we’ll help you develop these crucial skills to forge a bright career in the childcare industry.
You will develop the skills needed to work with babies and young children through a combination of theory and practical sessions. Covering subjects including development, safeguarding, health and safety and organising activities, you will understand how children develop and learn effective techniques for interacting with young children. You’ll also get the chance to apply what you have learnt on a work placement of 750 hours minimum in both day nurseries and school settings.
Course information
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence and written assignments.
A relevant Level 1 qualification or four GCSEs grade 3 or above, including English language and Maths, one of these should be at GCSE gradse 4 or above. You will also need a satisfactory DBS check.
If you don’t already have an English and Maths GCSE grade 9-4/A*-C, you will need to pass a diagnostic assessment.
Those joining the course with English and Maths grades below 9-4 will continue to work towards this as part of your main program of study*.

Alongside this qualification learners may need to attend functional skills or GCSE maths and English to support their further development in these areas, if you don’t already have an English and maths GCSE grade 9-4/A*-C. This will be discussed with you at interview.
The qualification is delivered through a range of both taught and practical sessions, enabling learners to obtain the skills required to work with young children. This qualification incorporates mandatory placement (minimum 250 hours) to gain practical experience of working with young children.
