Painting and Decorating students have been brushing up their skills with a hands-on project in Billingham.
The team of budding young tradespeople from Stockton Riverside College volunteered their time and effort to do their bit for the community by helping to refresh a sports hall at the Marsh House Sports and Community Centre.
With the students tasked with priming, painting and finishing the vast wall space, the college’s work experience co-ordinator Terry Dorchell said: “This was a fantastic experience for our students.
“It gave them the chance to put into practice the very basics of what they have learnt in the college and how that applies in a real work environment.”
The Marsh House Sports & Community Centre is a sports complex run by the charity ONsite Building Trust offering rooms to hire for the public.
It currently hosts a wide range of activity groups including everything from dance to judo, dog training, and even unicycling and juggling.
ONsite managing director Ian Brown said: “The work that the students have done for us at the centre is brilliant and will make a real difference to those people that use the facilities.
This is the second project that Stockton Riverside College’s Painting and Decorating students have delivered for the charity, after revamping the café facilities at Ragworth Community Centre in Stockton last year.
Ian said: “We are passionate about helping to give young people the chance to develop their skills as we know that it is so important when it comes to moving on to employment.
“We really appreciate the students’ support, plus we were impressed with their standard of work.”
Steve Rose, chair of ONsite Building Trust, said: “I am delighted that Stockton Riverside College is able to support ONsite with improving our much loved centres. It’s also important that ONsite, in partnership with the college, can help young people gain real life experience of working in a busy environment. I am looking forward to our partnership developing in the future."
