Course overview
A course for those who want to develop their reading, writing and speaking and listening skills to achieve a GCSE qualification or for those who require a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English to progress to further courses in further education or higher education or for employment purposes. You may also be interested in this course if you have achieved a Grade D/Grade 3 or below and wish to improve your grade.
The course is taught online through very detailed, clear, well-organised materials which enable you to study each week at times of your choosing.
Unit 1 – Explorations in creative Reading and Writing
Unit 2 – Writers viewpoints and perspectives
Unit 3 – Non-exam Assessment: Spoken Language
During the course, you will examine fiction and non-fiction texts, spoken language, you will also consider how you approach writing and, of course, there will be an element of spelling, punctuation and grammar to cover. By analysing and comparing texts, you will be able to improve on your ability to interpret the author’s messages and in turn improve your own communication skills.
Course information
You will belong to an online class and will have your own tutor who gives you help and support throughout the course. Each week you receive a Microsoft Teams message which explains what work needs to be done that week. You will submit your work to your tutor who marks it and gives detailed advice and feedback.
Final assessment is by exams during May/ June, you will be required to sit these examinations in college. Attendance to both examinations is mandatory, failure to attend can result in a charge.
Paper 1: 1 hour 45 minutes written exam
Paper 2: 1 hour 45 minutes written exam
Spoken Language: internally assessed throughout the course.
GCSE English is required in many professions such as teaching or nursing. It can also lead to A Levels and is a good foundation for enrolling on Access to Higher Education.
All students will need either access to a laptop or tablet with internet.
We ask all learners to complete an initial and diagnostic assessment to make sure GCSE is the best course for them.
Free, for those who do not have an A* to C /9-4 grade GCSE.
The focus of the course is firmly on independent study using Microsoft Teams. A variety of resources will be available to cover all the topics required. These include:
