Roseberry Finance & Accounting was founded in director Phil Robson’s bedroom in 2018 and after starting his finance career as an apprentice himself, it only made sense for apprentices to form a part of his business model.
He said: “I started my finance journey working in the cable manufacturing industry, which is where I achieved my level 2. When I started my own practice, I wanted to give others an opportunity as I was given one, so employing entry level talent has always formed part of our growth.”
His latest recruit, Alex, has just completed his Level 2 Accounts Assistant with Stockton Riverside College, and is weeks away from beginning his level 3. He started his post-school education by completing A levels, but a passion for numbers led him to seek out a taste of what could come next. He explained: “Whilst I was at college I wanted to get some work experience, and my love of numbers and accountancy being in my family led me to email Roseberry Finance and ask if there were any opportunities.
“Work experience here eventually led to a part-time job, and when Phil approached me about an apprenticeship opportunity it was too good and offer to refuse!”
As an employer, Phil speaks highly of the support of the tutors and the business development team at Stockton Riverside college. He says: “The college is spot on. I have a great relationship with the team and Alex’s tutor is highly knowledgeable and approachable. There are so many different routes to success as a young person and the learning through an apprenticeship is far more than just academic – the personal skills you develop serve you throughout life.”
Alex loves that his current role enables him to see a job from start to finish, with most of his responsibility covering various aspects of bookkeeping for limited companies. He said: “It’s always different, and I love getting stuck into each task and showing what I can do. I’d encourage anyone deciding what’s next on their education journey to consider how an apprenticeship could be the perfect next step.”
In the future, Alex looks forward to hopefully moving onto the Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician at Stockton Riverside College and then plans to become a chartered accountant, maybe even owning his own firm one day!
