The Stockton Riverside College annual trip to the Big Apple was another big hit back in November 2017, offering some amazing learning opportunities and experiences for 11 of our fantastic Travel & Tourism students and staff.

Paying a visit to some of the sights including the poignant Ground Zero, the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge, our learners got the full New York experience, and for many it was their first trip to America.

Flying with British Airways from Newcastle to Heathrow and then from Heathrow to JFK, students got the chance to talk with British Airways staff and find out more about the different job roles available on board and behind the scenes, whilst also enjoying a tour of the aircraft.

Experiencing a long haul flight was a first for many of the students heading across the pond, but this was a particularly useful experience for those interested in a future career as cabin crew.

To make the trip even more magical, it just so happened to be the 5th Avenue Christmas light switch on whilst the students were there, referred to by department store Saks as “the best Christmas display in years”, before taking a spin round the world famous ice skating rink at the Rockefeller centre.

As well as indulging in some retail therapy in Times Square, there was even time for a horse and carriage ride around Central Park and a short ferry ride over to Ellis Island to visit the iconic Stature of Liberty.

Taking in the famous landmarks proved a once in a lifetime experience for one Travel and Tourism student Levi Smart who said: “Visiting New York and flying with British Airways is something I’ve always wanted to do so this is a huge achievement ticked off for me - I’m so happy that the college gave me the opportunity.”

Our annual trip to New York is an amazing opportunity for our students who get to learn all about customer service in both aviation and accommodation, explore different tourist attractions and how they function, plus discover the world of potential careers at their feet.

Also offering the chance to spread the cost of such trips out across the year means it’s a more affordable option for parents and families, and it’s also hugely beneficial when preparing students for progression onto the next level of the course.

Programme Area Leader for Aviation and Travel and Tourism Kellie Wilson said: “Taking trips like this is great for Travel & Tourism studies because it gives our students first hand-experience of the industry and the opportunity to see how a scheduled airline functions, an experience we just can’t deliver in the classroom.

“For many of our students it was the first time they’ve flown or been away from home, but now they’ve been they’d all love to go back!”
