A group of unemployed young people are helping to brighten the day of visitors to a community centre in Bishop Auckland.

The creative team, who are taking part in the Prince’s Trust Team programme, rolled up their sleeves to redecorate a drop-in area at the Auckland Youth and Community Centre.

Prince’s Trust Team adds a splash of colourWith the students adding murals to the walls, including a solar system and caterpillar alphabet, the distinctive artwork is already proving a welcome addition to the community space.

Marc Iveson Team leader for the Prince’s Trust programme, delivered by Stockton Riverside College, said: “The project meant a lot to the young people, particularly as some live in the immediate area.”

This is the first time the Prince’s Trust Bishop Auckland Team has attempted a spray painting project, but Marc said with the hard work taking place over five days the young people were all pleased with the results.

“The group of seven young people did an amazing job and thoroughly enjoyed it,” he said. “The most important thing is that they got that sense of pride that they had achieved so much in such a short space of time.”

Also delighted with their efforts was Auckland Youth and Community Centre’s business development manager, John Wiseman. He said: “The young people’s work is really eye catching and has quite the wow factor for young visitors to the centre. The team worked hard and were a very friendly and organised bunch.”

Always working to make the centre more of an active community hub, the centre on Walker Drive offers a wide range of services for people of all ages in the community.

John said: “We want to bring more people in to the centre to access our services and the murals are a great addition for both the children and young people who attend our clubs.”

Prince’s Trust student Callum Ornsby, 19, of Bishop Auckland, said: “It is a great feeling to have accomplished something that we will be able to look back on for years to come.

“This was a great project and being from the area it was nice to do something for the local community.”

The Prince’s Trust Bishop Auckland Team is a free 12-week personal development programme offering young people aged 16 to 25 the chance to develop their skills by taking part in a series of group activities. For more details visit: www.stockton.ac.uk/princes-trust/
