Sam, an ex-Bede student, said he has found his first year at university “more challenging than I thought it would be”, but that he is really enjoying everything about his course, Biological Sciences, at Lancaster University.

It took some time to get used to both living away from home and studying at degree-level, but Sam found moving to somewhere completely new very exciting. “Lancaster isn’t like Teesside at all, so it’s cool to experience somewhere entirely different.”

So far the course is challenging but really interesting, Sam said, and he’s particularly enjoyed the modules looking at bio-ethics in society. “I’ve enjoyed those modules more than I thought, and the lecturers get you to look at things through an outsider perspective so you can see things from a different point of view.” His class have also been able to spend a lot of time getting experience in lab environments, having a go at diagnostics with things like blood work.

The course is a four-year degree with an integrated masters, which is something Sam had decided he wanted to before starting at university, but his aspirations of what he wants to go into after university have changed. Previously Sam was interested in going into conservation work, but now he is more drawn to working in public health and epidemiology. Having said that, he laughed that every new thing he learns about sounds appealing, and he keeps changing what he wants to do!

Looking back at his time at SRC Bede Sixth Form, Sam really feels that learning how to swap between his subjects is helping him now to focus on his different modules. His university course is a 50/50 split between coursework and exams and Sam credits completing an EPQ at Bede for preparing him well for the volume of coursework, allowing him to gain knowledge of how to research.

Sam, who grew up in Billingham and attended Northfield School and Sports College, would say to anyone considering studying at Bede: “Don’t be afraid to do what you’re interested in – don’t just do what you think you should do. All courses will develop your skills, for instance Classics has helped me in ways that I didn’t expect.” And when asked if he could change anything, if he could do it again, he said “I wouldn’t stress about results as much as I did, and try not to worry about things I couldn’t change.”

Sam chose Bede as it is the only sixth form in the area offering Classical Civilisation. It was a bonus that it was then so close to home, so that he could easily come in to use the Learning Resource Centre when needed. His time at SRC Bede “went too quickly!”, but he felt that “Bede developed me as a person”, and that he learnt a lot from his teachers and tutors as well as from the subjects and course content.
