Kushan has always wanted to have a career on the screen, and this September he’ll be taking his next steps towards it, with an unconditional offer for a brand new course at the University of Sunderland.

He’ll be one of the first batch of students studying the new BA (Hons) in Screen Performance, which is designed to build confidence in presenting and develop communication skills, and teaches you how to engage an audience whether you’re on the screen or the stage.

Kushan is set for a career in the spotlight
"I felt more at home at Bede than any other college I visited"

Kushan, who is originally from India and previously lived in Ireland, is particularly keen on eventually hosting his own show (like celebs Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel), and said that he first started thinking about a career in presenting when he got involved with the UK Youth Parliament (British Youth Council). A teacher at his school at the time encouraged him to apply and take part in the selection, only for him then to be chosen out of a huge 9,000 applicants.

His role with the council saw him meeting with fellow representatives from all over the UK, taking part in debates and learning to present in front of large audiences, and it was this that inspired his desire to go into presenting. Before that he’d been set on becoming an astrophysicist!

His time at Bede further cemented Kushan’s aims, where he chose to study subjects that he’d not done before. In Media Studies he learned about being both in front of and behind a camera, and about the production aspects of media. “With those skills I’ll be more employable and it will be easier for me to understand what’s going on behind-the-scenes”, he said. His other subjects were Business Studies and Computing: “From studying business I have a greater understanding of what’s going on in the world and how to pick out the most important aspects and details of information, and the technical knowledge and skills I’ve gained in computing will help me with all aspects of work.”

Kushan, a former student of St Patrick’s Catholic College, also served as Student Council President while he was at Bede, leading on and taking part in things like fundraising activities and events.

When asked why he chose SRC Bede, Kushan remembered that he felt “more at home” at Bede than any other college he’d visited, and that everyone came across as “super friendly”. “I found other colleges were too big for me to feel completely comfortable”, he said, adding that the small size of Bede is one of its many benefits as you get to know everyone.

“There’s a nice atmosphere, and there’s always someone to talk to – all the staff are really helpful and make time for their students. I’d particularly like to thank Mike for always offering extra time, Matt for helping with all of my projects, Tamara for being the backbone of the Student Council, and Alice and Suzy – they both helped me to nail my university applications.”

“Big thanks to all my teachers for all the help they gave me – it’s been a delight studying at Bede!”

We look forward to seeing Kushan on our screens in the future, no doubt hosting the next big show!
