What is a supported internship?

It is a structured, work-based study programme for 18–25-year-olds with SEND who have an education, health and care (EHC) plan.
The core aim of a supported internship is a substantial work placement facilitated by the support of a job coach.
It is a great opportunity to improve the life changes of young people with SEND by supporting them into sustained, paid employment.

What does a supported internship look like?

• Supported internships last for a minimum of six months and up to one year.
• It is a personalised study programme delivered by the college which includes the opportunity to study for relevant qualifications (maths and English) alongside their substantial work placement.
• Supported interns are in full time education and the supported internship placements are part of the course. There is no expectation that the intern
would be paid.

Our supported internship programmes...

• Starts in September.
• Maths and English qualifications.
• One day per week in College working on units which will gain them a nationally recognised qualification: King’s Trust Certificate in Personal Development and Employability.
• Work placement to start in Sept to June. Two days per week building up to max four days.
• Tailored support on placements gradually reducing as employability skills are developed.
• A tailored approach to match the right learner to the right placement.

Who would benefit from a supported internship?

Young people aged 18- 25 with an Education Health Care plan (EHCP); who need additional work-related experience to enable them to move towards employment.
