Introduction

The Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification, combining practical and theoretical study. This programme will introduce you to a range of skills needed in a career as an IT professional. You will develop new and existing abilities in order to prepare yourself for an exciting career within the computing industries.

What will I learn

You will study units equivalent to three A-Levels. This course will help you develop the skills you need in order to understand the complexity and variety of the IT industry. In addition to your main study programme, you will also engage in activities to develop your English, Maths and employability skills as well as taking part in work experience placements. The BTEC Nationals in Computing Level 3 modules will include: Year 1: In year one of your studies you will complete three mandatory units that will include: • Principles of Computer Science (Written exam) • Fundamentals of Computer Systems (Written exam) • IT Systems Security and Encryption (Mandatory) • Business Applications and Social Media (Mandatory) In additional you will study two more optional units. Year 2: In year two of your studies you will complete three further mandatory units that will include: • Planning and Management of Computing Projects (Controlled Assessment) • Business Applications of Social Media (Mandatory) • The Impact of Computing (Mandatory) In additional you will study four more optional unit.

How will I learn

Students at Stockton Riverside College study in dedicated computing suites with state of the art IT facilities, including Microsoft Office, VMWare Workstation and Microsoft Visual Studio. There is a 1Gbp network for superfast video streaming and dual monitors for improved working.

What's next

Successful completion of the Diploma/ Extended Diploma may enable entry onto the BSc (Hons) at various HE establishments or continuing studying here at SRC undertaking a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Computing and Systems Development.
