After trying university and realising that traditional classroom learning and endless PowerPoint presentations were not for her, a house move helped set Celine on an entirely new path with adult part-time education.
She relocated with her family to Stockton-on-Tees and found that Stockton Riverside College was right on her doorstep, allowing her to walk in for classes.
While browsing the part‑time course guide online, the Level 2 Bricklaying course caught her eye.
So, at 22 years old, Celine took charge of her future and enrolled on a practical course that could lead her to a career.
To learn more about her journey, we asked about her experience as an adult learner entering the construction sector.
How have you found the adult part-time bricklaying course?
“It’s rewarding to build something from scratch and learning practical new skills every day.”
What is the course delivery like as an adult learner?
“We are always doing practical.
“I am in three days a week. I do two afternoons on a Wednesday and Thursday, and 10am – 3pm on a Friday.”
“Chris is a really good teacher. I remember the theory he teaches us in class.”
“I get along with everyone. I forget that I am older than them.”
How do you fund your course?
“I have a flexible payment plan. Now that I am at work, I will have it paid off soon.”
What advice would you give to other adults interested in part-time learning?
“Don’t hesitate because of your age or after spending time away from education.
“It’s very good. You can get an extra skill. The bricklaying course has taught me discipline.”
What will you do next?
“I want to work and get a couple of years’ experience. Then, eventually I want to study to become a quantity surveyor.”
We have just celebrated Women in Construction Week, what advice would you give to other women who want to study construction?
“I am not put off by the industry being a lot of men. My class treat me the same.
“I may have been intimidated if I didn’t do the course.
“Once I get my certificates, I will feel confident at work.”
