Students and staff stood together today to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in service of their country.

dsc00351A short ceremony at Stockton Riverside College's Teesdale site marked Armistice Day, a national event held to remember the nation's fallen.

Silence fell over the Learning Resource Centre at 11am as the college observed a two minute silence.

Marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, today's event included students from the college's Public Services course, while the act of remembrance and reading of the Kohima Epitaph were taken by Ella Jones and Lucy Freeman.

dsc00349Leading the college service, Squadron Leader Neville Dart, Stockton Riverside College's Head of Infrastructure, said: "As is the college tradition, whenever Armistice Day falls on a week day Stockton Riverside College remembers those who gave their lives in war and conflict.

"This event is a fitting reminder for the multi-cultural and multi-faith college society of the Fundamental British Values that colleges and universities promote in their students.

"Values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

"Today we remember all those men and women who gave their lives and also reflect on those who fought or whose lives were affected by more recent conflicts."

11am on November 11, represents the time and day that World War I officially came to an end.
