Games Development students were given the chance to put their growing expertise to good use to help try a new game being developed on Teesside.

R8 Games studio brought their upcoming release to Stockton Riverside College where the students put it to the test.

“The session was a great opportunity for us to get some fresh eyes and fresh feedback on the game that we are producing. A bunch of Games students are probably perfect for that,” said R8 Games’ Associate Producer and Lead Quality Assurance, Rob Doughty.

Formula Fusion, which will be released on Steam, is described as “an anti-gravity racing games which puts your racing pedigree up against the rest of the world”.

With the game in the final stages of development at the Middlesbrough-based studio, Rob said: “We got a lot of positive feedback from the students, it’s good to see what we are working on is going in the direction that we wanted.”

When developing a game the Associate Producer said the role of expert does shift. He said: “When you are making the game you are the expert, but once it is released, in terms of how it is received, the gamer becomes the expert and they know what they do and don’t like.”

The fact that Formula Fusion got the thumbs up from the students came as a boost to game-makers who have been working on it for over a year.

“To see people enjoying the game helps to rebuild that excitement that when you are developing a game can be removed because you have to be so focused,” said Rob.

“The students’ feedback really helped open our eyes to how close we are to completion and how much the hard work has paid off.”

Stockton Riverside College’s Lecturer in Games Development, Paul Abley, said: “It was great to get a studio like R8 Games in and for students to be able to test a new build that hasn’t been released yet.”

For the students it not only offered the chance to have a go at and give direct feedback to game developers on a brand new game, but they could also show their own work and pick up hints and tips.

Games Development student, Sam Dixon, 19, of Sedgefield, said: “It was great fun testing the game and nice to chat to the guys and get advice on different aspects of my work. Formula Fusion was really good, we wanted to put it on the hard drive and take it home.”

Fellow student Jason Diggle, 17, of Billingham, said: “To have the team come in was awesome. We are going to be working on a class project soon so we were able ask them how the studio works and get an idea of how to go about things.

“When I saw the quality of the game they are developing I thought it was beautiful. For someone like me who loves environment models it looked fantastic.”
