Stockton Riverside College’s Painting & Decorating students have been working hard at bringing the outdoors in at Youth Direction.

Keen to brighten up the kitchen area of their Stockton office the youth service’s Participation Adviser, Sara Fellows, approached Stockton Riverside College’s Painting & Decorating lecturer, Tony Ferguson, to brain storm ideas.

“We work in a building with no windows so I wanted to find a way to bring the outdoors in,” said Sara. “We already work closely with the college so we came up with idea of the students making us a mural.”

The workers at Youth Direction voted on their preferred colours and the Level 2 students took it from there. They worked over three days to complete the countryside themed wall art.

Reece Naisbitt, a former Our Lady & St Bede’s student, said: “It felt like I was at work doing a real job, I enjoyed it and I was really happy with the finished piece.”

John Hancock, 21, added: “It has given me some really good experience in the workplace.”

Sara said the staff were impressed with the way that the students approached the task and how much hard work they put in. “They worked incredibly hard and were tidy and polite the whole time they were here,” she said.

“The staff kitchen is now a much more pleasant place to sit and have lunch.”

The students were presented with certificates and high street vouchers for their hard work by Dave Willingham, Service Manager at Youth Direction, and Sara Fellows, Participation Adviser.
