Five Stockton Riverside College students are celebrating job success after completing a short sector-based course.

The new recruits will be starting careers in the care industry as a result of the six-week tailor-made academy, delivered in partnership with Stockton’s Enable Care.

The care firm’s Director, Diane Reynolds, said: “We were delighted to be able to make five job offers as a result of the programme.

“In fact the calibre of the candidates was so strong we were faced with the difficult decision of who to take forward.”

By working directly with businesses and job centres, Stockton Riverside College’s Sector-Based Work Academies can help to create a job-ready workforce, by equipping job seekers with some of the essential skills required to work in an employer’s specific field.

During the latest course, 12 students picked up qualifications in employability linked to domiciliary care, health and social care, manual handling, dementia care, mental health, first aid and food hygiene.”

Stockton Riverside College’s Pre-employment and Skills Tutor, Kelly Oyston, said: “Our Sector-Based Work Academies offer a brilliant opportunity for job seekers to build their skills and qualifications in a particular field.

“Even those who didn’t receive job offers are now equipped to apply for other positions in the care industry.”

With plans to now run three similar programmes in partnership with the College, Enable Care’s Director Diane, said: “This has been fantastic for us as it means our new starters can hit the ground running.”

Impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of all the candidates, she said: “By committing to six weeks of training these people had already demonstrated a high level of commitment.”

Among those to receive a job offer was Samantha Rooney, 37, from Stockton. She said: “It’s amazing, it still hasn’t sunk in yet. It has been hard work but it has been worth it.”

Having been out of work for 14 months, new recruit Mark Roachford, 50, of Thornaby, said: “It has definitely been worthwhile. I have come out of the course feeling like I have gained everything I wanted.”

A sixth student has also been offered a position within the care industry following the short course, while several others now plan to progress to further study with Stockton Riverside College.
