Young people looking to improve their employment chances helped bring an extra touch of festive cheer to elderly residents in Billingham.

The students who are all taking part in The Prince’s Trust Team programme spent five days at Allington Care Home putting up decorations, working in the gardens and generally getting to know the residents.

“The idea behind the project was to show the young people the difference they can make in their own community,” said Prince’s Trust Billingham Team Leader, Martin Copley.

“It also had the potential to break down some of the barriers that can often exist between young and old.”

The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a 12-week personal development course delivered by Stockton Riverside College offering unemployed young people the chance to take part in a series of tasks and challenges to boost their skills and improve their future career chances.

Lewis Bell, 22, of Billingham, said: “I have really enjoyed the course, we have done loads of different things but working in the care home has been my favourite.

“We did crafts with the residents which offered the chance to have a good chat. I really enjoyed it.”

Home Manager Karen Poole said: “The young people have done an amazing job helping in the garden and making cards, but the biggest thing of all is that the residents have got something from it as well.

“The students have been so respectful and have just got on with the job at hand.”
