A career in teaching was always the dream for SRC Bede sports lecturer Stephen.

A former sports student himself, he describes the College teachers as role models to the many students whose lives they change.

The 25-year-old was further inspired when he started work in student support at the College and seeing the "positive impact" the teachers have on students lives. So when the opportunity came up to do some cover teaching, it was an easy decision for Stephen.

He said: "I fell in love straight away." Teaching the course he once studied, he added: "I had the background knowledge of having done the course myself and the more I taught the more I enjoyed it."

Having completed a sports studies degree at Teesside University, he was in a prime position to sign up for the PGCE delivered at Stockton Riverside College and gain his teaching qualification.

"The course was part-time which worked well for me," he said, having attended lessons just one evening a week. Stephen picked up practical experience doing voluntary teaching hours at SRC Bede.

He said: "The course was very inclusive and it taught you a variety of teaching techniques."

During the programme he explained: "It included assessments, presentations and teaching observations, as well as submitting a portfolio of work. It was good to learn the theory behind teaching and then link that to your everyday practice."

Securing a job offer from SRC Bede, all the hard work certainly paid off.

"To complete the course was an amazing feeling. I had set myself a goal of becoming a qualified teacher in the sports department. That first lecture I carried out as a graduate gave me a huge sense of achievement. It was an overwhelming moment to say the least."

He said: "It was always the plan to become a teacher. I originally wanted to teach in a secondary school but I fell in love with the College and the course. It felt right."

And for his students, he said: "Because I did the course they are studying it gives them a clear idea of what can be achieved."
