It will be the red carpet treatment for our own Prince's Trust assistant team leader, Paul O'Sullivan, after being nominated for a Prince's Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Celebrate Success Awards.
The awards recognise the achievements of young people who have succeeded against the odds, improved their chances in life and had a positive impact on their local community.
Off to a glittering ceremony at the Sage Gateshead tomorrow Paul is nominated for the Launch Group Young Ambassador of the Year Award.
Poor school results and a zero hours contract left Paul struggling and anxious until he saw an advert on Facebook promoting Team – a 12 week Prince’s Trust programme that builds the confidence and employability prospects of unemployed young people.
Supported by the Team Leader, Paul overcame his anxiety and strengthened his confidence and self-esteem by taking part in a range of different team building and group activities.
Within a matter of weeks, his confidence had returned, he had developed new friendships and had started to volunteer on other Prince’s Trust programmes, sharing his own story with other young people.
Seeing his potential as a leader, Paul was encouraged to apply for the role of Assistant Team Leader on the next Team programme at Stockton Riverside College. He applied and successfully secured the post.
Paul now works full time as an Assistant Team Leader, helping and inspiring other young people who may be struggling.
Wanting to reach even more young people, Paul successfully applied to become a Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador, overcoming his public speaking anxieties to deliver uplifting speeches about his journey to supporters, volunteers and young people.
In recognition of his exemplary work, he was invited to The Trust’s annual garden party at Buckingham Palace.
Paul said: “Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much things have changed for me. I’m so much happier, I’ve got a steady income and I’m in a job I love helping other young people. Thank you to The Prince’s Trust.”
Jonathan Boatman, Director of The Launch Group said: “Paul hasn’t just changed his own life, but has been able to inspire others by sharing his story and demonstrating the life changing impact of The Prince’s Trust. I look forward to meeting him and the other finalists at this year’s ceremony and wish them the very best of luck.”
Youth charity The Prince's Trust gives disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence to find a job. Three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work, training or education.
Stockton Riverside College delivers six Team programmes across the region with locations in Stockton, Billingham, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Darlington and Bishop Auckland. The college also offers Prince's Trust Achieve courses. For details visit: https://www.stockton.ac.uk/princes-trust/
