Summer school has proven an inspiration for SRC Bede Sixth Form student Lewis Sutton.

Oxford visit proves an inspirationThe aspiring scientist put his knowledge and skills to the ultimate test, spending a week experiencing life as a Materials Science student at the University of Oxford.

“It was an eye opening experience,” said the 17-year-old who is currently studying A level Chemistry, Physics and Maths at SRC Bede.

Attending lectures taught by leading international researchers, conducting laboratory work and taking part in team building activities such as rowing and Ultimate Frisbee, he said it was an experience he would certainly recommend to others.

Offered a unique insight into their chosen course, students at the Oxford summer school were also given the opportunity to receive assistance from university lecturers with their UCAS applications; this included help writing personal statements, cover admissions questions and pick up tips on interview technique.

At the end of the week, groups were tasked with building a mock nuclear flask capable of withstanding fire. Lewis’ team coming up with the innovative idea: putting a water balloon inside.

Now hoping to go on to study Materials Science at Oxford, the SRC Bede student said: “STEM will always grow to be more and more relevant as new technologies emerge, meaning a future in STEM is a safe and exciting choice if you are interested in science.

“I love discovering and solving problems so it has always made sense to study those subjects.”
