Students have been marking a milestone at The Skills Academy as the Billingham college sees its first batch of students celebrating success.

One year in and it's time to celebrate new skills

Opened last year, the College off Marsh House Avenue, offers a range of practical introductory courses for young people aged 16 to 18.

The aim was to create a place that helps school leavers who may be undecided which direction they want their future career to take or those looking to make a return to education.

“Through hard work and determination the learners, with the help and support of all our staff, have shown outstanding results in achievement, success and future progression,” said Academy Manager, Marie Clay.

Marking the culmination of their studies with a presentation and barbecue, many of the students are now planning to continue their studies having found the right route for them.

Winning the title of Childcare Student of the Year Charlotte Stobbs, 17, said: “The Skills Academy has helped build my confidence, in fact I enjoyed everything about it.”

While Creative Arts and Media student, Joseph Harker, 17, said: “When I came here I couldn’t do graphics but now I can and I’ve even won an award for it.”

Taking home the title of Outstanding Contribution to Graphic Design, he added: “I have really enjoyed making new friends here.”

It is a message echoed by many of The Skills Academy students who were all celebrating their own personal successes, surrounded by family and friends.

The Skills Academy was built last year, the result of a joint partnership between Stockton Riverside College, Stockton Borough Council and Egglescliffe School.

Run by Stockton Riverside College staff and teachers, it offers an alternate route for young people in Billingham and the surrounding areas who are looking for a more hands-on way of learning.

The Academy is situated just down the road from Stockton Riverside College’s sixth form campus, SRC Bede, offering A levels and additional courses, and it also compliments the range of vocational courses and apprenticeships on offer at the Stockton site and NETA.
