A lesson in musical theatre hit all the right notes for students at Stockton Riverside College.

Star of stage and screen, Layton Williams, took time out of his busy schedule to share a few pointers with the next generation of up and coming performers.

Currently starring as Seaweed in the UK tour of Hairspray, the musical theatre performer said: “I really enjoy being able to share my experiences.”

At just 23, he said: “I am no Mr know-it-all, but I do like to be able to give something back and pass on what I have learnt.”

Delivering a dance workshop, the young actor, who is originally from Manchester, gave his top tips for delivering a polished performance.

And, having starred in the likes of London’s Billy Elliot the Musical, Thriller Live, the UK tour of Rent and probably best known for his role in the BBC comedy Bad Education, Layton offered an insight into his career so far.

He said: “The best thing about being on stage is the live buzz. If you go wrong then you have to pick it up because there are people watching. You have to be on your feet and in the moment.”

His advice to the Performing Arts Musical Theatre students, “don’t be afraid to let your real self out and always remember what you have to offer”.

He said: “You have to be able to get it wrong, to fall on the floor sometimes and be able to laugh at yourself and get on with it. It is these things, as a performer that will go on to make you better.”
