Foundation Skills student Laura Stook has proven she’s a dab hand when it comes to helping in the kitchen.
The 23-year-old from Stockton impressed all those around her when she embarked on a work placement at Stockton Riverside College’s Oasis bistro.
Helping prepare the food and clearing tables, Laura proved she’s in her element when there’s a job to be done.
“I enjoyed it,” said Laura, who is no stranger to helping out with the pots at home.
Taking part in a work or vocational placement is a key part of the Skills for Employment, Training and Development course at Stockton Riverside College.
Helping put lessons learnt into practice, it offers a real insight into the demands of working life.
For Laura, who has Down’s Syndrome, time in the workplace brought out many of her personal strengths.
Mum Karen said: “Laura fitted in to the workplace and the college really well. She seems to just gel with people.”
Of the course she said: “I can really see the benefits, in Laura’s self-esteem, her skills and just generally her personality.”
At Stockton Riverside College our Foundation Skills courses are about more than picking up qualifications, though you’ll do that as well, they’re also about building confidence, developing life skills and achieving your personal goals.
