It is battle-on for Teesside’s own The Voice UK hopeful Craig Carter.

Tonight the 29-year-old from Billingham will return to our television screens as we see him battle to keep his place in the popular TV talent show.

“It has been an incredible experience so far,” said Carter, who is giving nothing away about the outcome.

If successful former labourer Carter, who is studying an FdA in Performing Arts at Stockton Riverside College in partnership with Teesside University, will proceed to the show’s live knock-out rounds.

But while he is clearly aiming high, the Billingham lad is keeping his feet on the ground and this week even made a return to his roots, taking some time out from his hectic schedule to visit students taking part in one of the college’s Prince’s Trust Team projects.

Giving the changing rooms at Stockton’s Grosvenor Road playing field a bit of a spruce up, is just one of a series of tasks and challenges the Team of unemployed young people are undertaking to help develop their skills and future employment chances.

With overalls at the ready Carter was quick to roll up his sleeves and offer a helping hand.

“It was great to get the chance to meet some of the students from The Prince’s Trust Team and see the great work they are doing in the local community,” he said.

Plus it proved the perfect distraction from any anxious thoughts about the weekend.

Stockton Riverside College’s Prince’s Trust Stockton Team leader, Martin Copley, said: “It was fantastic for the students to get the chance to meet Carter as a fellow student at the college.

“By coming along, chatting to the students and mucking in he brought a bit of realism to his experience, showing the young people that, like them, he is a student on a study programme and to achieve in anything it takes hard work and determination.”

Prince’s Trust student Katie Duke, 18, of Billingham, said: “The course has been great for building new skills and confidence. It’s good to be able to do something for the community.”

Jamie Smart, 18, of Stockton, said: “It’s given us new skills and we’ve made new friends. The community projects have been really good, we work well as a team as we all have different things that we can do.”

Of Carter’s visit to the project Katie said: “I’ll be looking out to see how he does now.”

While Jamie added: “I’ll give him a handshake if he goes through.”

Carter can be seen on The Voice UK’s battle rounds tonight on ITV1 at 7pm. Share your pics and messages of support on Facebook (tagging Carter Music), Twitter (tagging @Carter643) and Instagram (#Carter #TheVoiceUK #StocktonRiversideCollege).
