A group of budding young actors from Stockton Riverside College have come up with an innovative new way to get the extra stage experience they need to boost their future career chances.

It’s show time for enterprising studentsThe performing arts students have joined forces to launch their own small theatre company, with their first show, Chatroom, taking to the stage at the college this month.

“As actors we were all keen to put on more shows,” said Sol Taibi, 19, from Middlesbrough.

“We realised, what better way to get more experience than to put on some shows ourselves?”

Accessing advice and support from the college’s enterprise initiative, the seven students set about creating Dynamic Infinite.

All allocated their own roles within the business, the students make up both cast and crew.

“As a theatre company we have had to take responsibility for every aspect of putting on a show,” said Lucy Wrigley, 17, of Billingham.

After pitching their idea to a panel, Stockton Riverside College’s enterprise scheme gave the student enterprise an initial £100 loan to cover start-up costs.

With rehearsals for the company’s first performance now in full swing, Sol said: “As acting students we learn about every aspect of putting on a show and now with our own small theatre company we are getting more experience of putting that into practice.”

Lucy said: “The organisation that has gone into this has given us a real insight into all that goes into putting on a show and the many roles that exist in the industry.

“We still have lots to learn but this is something we are passionate about and we are pretty proud of what we have achieved so far.

Chatroom by Enda Walsh, a dark comedy about a group of teenagers on the internet exploring issues such as manipulation, cyberbullying and adolescent insecurity, will take to the Margaret Armstrong Stage at Stockton Riverside College on Tuesday November 14 and Wednesday November 15. Tickets are adults £6 and concessions £4.

Part of the Enterprising Stockton initiative, Stockton Riverside College encourages a culture of enterprise across the college by bringing a host of opportunities to its students alongside their studies.
