It’s no longer just the Sport students who will be getting the chance to show off their skills on the football pitch.

Stockton Riverside College has launched a new football team offering opportunities to players from across the college.

So far the new team comprises learners from a range of different subjects.

With players stepping up from the likes of Construction and Health and Social Care, Sport Enrichment Co-ordinator Lisa-Marie Watson said: “From what we have seen through the college’s Sport Enrichment programme we have got some good players who aren’t Sport students.”

She said: “A lot of students play for teams outside of the college so it made sense to put together a team.”

Already the group are proving they are on the ball, winning their first ever match, a friendly against Middlesbrough College A level students in December.

“The team were amazing and we were really impressed,” said Lisa-Marie. “Particularly considering that was the first time they had really played together as a team.”

Lining up more friendly matches in the coming months, the team are hoping they can maintain their winning streak.

At Stockton Riverside College all students are encouraged to get involved in sporting activities through the Student Services’ Sport Enrichment programme.

Lisa-Marie said: “Although this is a male football team we have had some interest in putting together a female team.”

If you would like to get involved or want to know more about the sport enrichment opportunities available at the college, you can catch up with Lisa-Marie at the Student Services desk.
