It’s been a hair-raising day for Performing Arts Acting student Charlotte Bergman.

The 18-year-old has had her head shaved in a bid to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

Inspired by her grandfather’s ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer, Charlotte told us: “I wanted to do something more dramatic than a bake sale or sitting in a bath of beans.”

It was while chatting about ideas with friends that she came up with the idea.

Nervous to begin with, when it came to having her head shaved in front of a crowd of onlookers, Charlotte said: “I was excited and just wanted to get it over with.”

Having bought two wigs in preparation, she added: “It is something I had given a lot of thought. It was something that I wanted to do.”

Attracting an audience of students from across the college, the former Conyers School pupil said she was overwhelmed by the support.

Doing the honours with the clippers was Barbering lecturer Shannon Cummings.

Of seeing her hair fall to the floor, Charlotte said: “I kept my eyes closed for most of it.”

The fundraiser coincided with the college’s Respect Festival today, an annual event promoting equality and diversity within society by bringing people together to learn from each other and encourage mutual respect.
