Today we are putting the focus on English and Maths as part of our Figure It Out Festival.
The aim is to help all of our students brush up on these skills and gain an understanding of why they are so important.
"Everything requires English and Maths whether you're a hairdresser working out hair colour ratios, a labourer measuring distances or a healthcare professional sharing medication instructions," said Rebecca Matthews, Stockton Riverside College's Head of Department for English, Maths and ESOL.
In fact, she says, any career you choose will require some element of English and Maths and that is why they are skills every employer is looking for.
What's more it's not just in the workplace that functional skills matter.
From working out your weekly budget to holding an informed conversation, we are all reliant on having a good grasp of numbers and the English language.
