Digital careers were the hot topic up for discussion for students at Stockton Riverside College when Middlesbrough firm, Calm Digital, paid a visit.
Offering an insight into opportunities that exist in the industry, the creative and digital agency’s SEO Manager, Adam Foster, said: “Our aim was to talk to students about the many opportunities that exist in the digital industries and hopefully offer some inspiration.”
Describing the sector as “a growth area”, the digital marketeer said: “It is a great industry to be in as there are a lot of companies out there in need of digital marketing, graphic design, web design and or web development services. It is an area where if you are good then you shouldn’t struggle to get work.”
Keen to help encourage and develop future talent, Calm Digital is developing links with the college with a view to offer work experience opportunities. Sharing the benefit of his experience Adam met with Computing, Creative Media and Games Design students.
“Looking back at when I was at college I now know that having someone come in from industry is something that I would have found useful,” he said.
As for the benefits of work experience, he added: “It is when you get the chance to put what you have learnt into practice in a work environment that you really find out if something is for you.
“When it comes to making decisions like what to study at university, experience of the workplace can not only help you find out what you do and don’t like, it can also open your eyes to other opportunities.”
Steven Crosby Stockton Riverside College’s Assessor for Digital and IT Professional said: “To have representatives visit from a company like Calm Digital is fantastic for our students. It helps them to see the variety of opportunities that are available and discover what is happening in the industry here in Teesside.”
Stockton Riverside College offers a range of Creative Media and Computing courses offering students the chance to develop their digital, technical and creative skills.
Working to briefs based on the real world, students get to develop practical skills, gain hands-on experience and learn what life is really like in the digital and creative industries.
