From helping to refurb a youth club to delivering fencing sessions to primary school children, no two days are the same for a young person on the Prince’s Trust Team programme.

“That’s what the course is all about,” said Assistant Team Leader Stephen Docherty. “To build confidence, develop skills and basically help improve the young people’s future chances.”

At the same time the Team are able to make a real difference to the community around them by taking part in a series of tasks and challenges.

In the latest project, the Billingham Team helped decorate facilities at BCT Aspire, a youth club for youngsters that delivers three sessions a week from their BCT den on Belasis Avenue.

Having recently extended their youth space, founder Paul Burgum said: “To be honest the space was a bit dilapidated so The Prince’s Trust guys came in to help decorate the space.

“They carried out a lot of the prep work and gave our performance room a fresh coat of paint.”

Keen to do their bit to help, the Team members knuckled down to transform the space just in time for the youth club to hold a Halloween party.

Assistant Team Leader Stephen said: “There was a real sense of camaraderie, the project helped to bring the group together.”

The Prince’s Trust Team programme is a free 12-week personal development scheme available to unemployed young people aged 16 to 25. It offers the chance to meet new people, gain skills, take part in an adventure residential, get two weeks of work experience and even pick up a recognised qualification.

Delivered by Stockton Riverside College, the Billingham Team is one of six Prince’s Trust Team courses offered by the college with groups also run in Stockton, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Darlington and Bishop Auckland.

The next Billingham Team starts in January. To get involved call 07436 795884 or for details visit: www.stockton.ac.uk/princes-trust/ Find out more about the youth groups offered by BCT Aspire on their Facebook page, BCT Aspire CIC.
