Here at Stockton Riverside College our staff are always finding new ways of showing that they have got bags of generosity.

This winter, programme area leader for access to higher education Andrea Harrison, did that quite literally, as part of a team of team of volunteers to put together care packages for those in need across the Tees Valley.

Funded through Foresters Financial, 150 bags were filled with everyday essentials including soap, toothpaste, an umbrella, gloves, a towel and a travel mug.

The bags were then handed to Five Lamps and Middlesbrough Council for distribution.

“We tried to think of the basic essentials that most people take for granted but would make a real difference to those in need,” said Andrea.

The bags will now be passed on to those living without a permanent address or those facing hardship for a number of different reasons.

Alison Riley, Middlesbrough Council’s operational lead for homelessness and sexual violence, said: “For those who are staying in accommodation or sofa surfing the care packages will be really helpful.”

She said for those without a permanent address, items such as toiletries can often seem like a bit of a luxury.

The packages can also be used as an emergency resource for victims of domestic violence or assault.

Alison said: “For those people the care packages can be a bit of a lifesaver, particularly if they have nothing else and don’t want to return to their house to get the things they need if going into temporary accommodation.”

Foresters Financial is an international financial services provider that aims to give back to families and their communities by supporting community projects and providing its members with opportunities to volunteer.
