Highflying students were given a real taste of airport life as they celebrated Stockton Riverside College’s Aviation Awards.

DSC00509Durham Tees Valley Airport opened its doors to around 80 students, their family and friends, for the event which highlighted the hard work and achievements of students past and present.

“To be able to hold the awards ceremony in the airport seems particularly poignant,” said Aviation course leader, Catherine Carney. “This is the very heart of the industry in which the students hope to go on to work and so it is fantastic to be able to give them the opportunity to share an insight with their family and friends.”

DSC00482The ceremony which included guests from the likes of British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Swissport, and of course the airport itself, also saw the return of former students now working in the industry.

Catherine said: “We are proud to see so many of our students go on to secure the jobs they were hoping for. Competition for jobs within the industry is fierce but we have many former Stockton Riverside College students Aviation students currently working for some of the best known airlines in the world including British Airways, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways and Jet2.

The glittering ceremony saw three special awards go out to some of the College’s standout Aviation students. The Commendation Award went to Charlotte Callender, 17, from Norton, Jordan Luke, 17, of Stockton took the High Flyer Award and Eleasha Duncan, 17, from Darlington, was named Student of the Year.

“I am so thankful to have won this award, both to my teachers and to Durham Tees Valley Airport where I carried out my work experience,” said Eleasha, who is now off to Teesside University to continue her studies in Aviation and Tourism, run in partnership with Stockton Riverside College.
