Recognising the importance of English and maths paid off for two lucky Stockton Riverside College students.

Aidan Harker and Catherine Ward each took home an iPad Mini after being named the first winners of the college’s brand new English and maths attendance challenge.

“It came as a surprise when I was told I had won,” said 17-year-old childcare student, Catherine.

“It’s certainly a good incentive to get people to attend classes,” added Aidan who is 19 and studying ICT at the college.

The attendance challenge is the latest initiative organised by Stockton Riverside College to encourage students to keep working towards these core skills.

Every time a student attends an English or maths class, or revision session, their names are entered in a prize draw with winners drawn once a term.

“The more classes and study sessions students attend the better their chance of winning,” said Rebecca Matthews, Head of Department: Maths, English and ESOL.

“The aim is to improve attendance across English and maths, helping students to improve on these essential skills.”

Under new Government rules all students aged under 19 must continue to work towards their English and maths if they haven’t achieved grade A*-C (4-9) at GCSE or equivalent.

Rebecca says these are key skills that are vital to everyday life.

She said: “At Stockton Riverside College we want to give our students every possible chance to reach their full potential and achieve their future ambitions.”

As the first winner of the attendance challenge for maths, Catherine said: “Maths isn’t my favourite subject but I know you need it every day.”
She said winning the iPad Mini will certainly come in handy for her studies.

Picking up the first attendance prize for English, Aidan said: “You definitely need your English to get a job out there and the more sessions you go to, the more likely you are to pass.”

Hoping to go on to work in IT, he added: “A career in IT will involve report writing and everything has to be grammatically correct, so I know that having your English does come into play with that.”
