This month students and staff are stepping up to help raise funds for charity at Stockton Riverside College.

Part of Cancer Research UK's Walk All Over Cancer campaign, the challenge is to hit your 10,000 steps a day everyday this March.

In the first of our Walk All Over Cancer profiles we caught up with Student Service Manager Julie Wilson.

Name: Julie

Age: 36

From: Stockton

How is the challenge going so far?

It has been good fun and great that so many people (students and staff) are getting involved across the college.

Why did you decide to sign up?

About a year ago I decided that I needed to make an effort to get fitter and healthier. I started jogging and monitoring my progress with an activity tracker. Cancer Research UK's step challenge fits in with that.

How challenging is the 10,000 daily steps for you?

It is still a challenge for me. On work days it can difficult as I have to spend a lot of time at my desk, but at the weekend, running around after my little boy, it can be easy. If it had been a year ago it would have been exhausting.

What is your top tip for getting your steps up?

Make sure you get away from your desk on a lunchtime - even if it is just for 20 minutes.

Want to join the challenge? Watch out for our fun and fitness activities happening throughout the college this month to help you get your steps up.
