Are you joining Cancer Research UK with their Walk All Over Cancer this March?

SRC Bede Sixth Form student Alayna Johnson is. She is just one of the students and staff across Stockton Riverside College to have pledged to walk 10,000 steps a day throughout March.

In the second of our Walk All Over Cancer Profiles we chatted to the 18-year-old to find out how it’s going.

Why did you decide to take part?

I was chatting to a staff member at Bede who mentioned it and asked if I would like to take part. If I can do anything for charity, especially for a cancer charity, I’d be happy to be involved.

How difficult is the challenge for you?

I don’t normally walk a lot. I would usually do a daily average of about 5,000. This has meant pushing myself to do more?

How is the challenge going do far?

We are a week in and I have managed to do my 10,000 steps everyday so far. It’s become part of my routine now.

What have you been doing to get your steps up?

I walk around the college a lot and I have been taking my dog for longer walks.

Have you struggled at all?

There was one night it got to 11pm and still had 2,000 steps to do. We have a treadmill at home so it meant doing a brisk walk for half an hour.

Do you think you will stick to your 10,000 daily steps after this month?

I do think I will continue but if there’s a day where I don’t feel like doing it I won’t force myself. I do enjoy it, when I am on the treadmill or walking my dog I can just put my headphones on and have some time to myself.

What would be your top tip for other people taking part?

If you don’t like walking try to combine it with something that you do enjoy, like listening to music or walking your dog.

Want to join the challenge? Watch out for our fun and fitness activities happening throughout the college this month to help you get your steps up.
